Our response to The United States’ strikes in Venezuela

On the morning of January 3, 2026, The United States conducted an illegal act of war when we had bombed Venezuela and kidnaped their president Nicolás Maduro. Last year The Green Party of Alaska adopted as one of its priorities to: “In solidarity with local, state, and national organizations, we shall organize and represent a united front in standing against fascism.” This invasion of Venezuela, that The US is calling Operation Absolute Resolve, is an undemocratic and unconstitutional action that Congress is more than happy to help The Trump Administration execute. This action has nothing to do with the drug trade, but rather like our past wars it is driven by a desire for this country’s resources.

What can we do to stop these acts of imperialism from happening? Who asked us if we were ready to fight a war and overturn the government and economic system of another country? President Donald Trump won the 2024 election because of The Biden’s Administration unwillingness to stop Isreal’s genocide of The Palestinian People. President Trump advoked that he receives a peace prize, claiming that he’s stopped wars, even telling the press his new year’s resolution was for peace. Now his administration is committing war crimes in Latin America to open a path for America’s oil corporations to extract and sell from the world’s largest oil reserve in Venezuela.

The solution is to transition our economy from a crony capitalist system informed by outdated Neo-Classical Economic thinking to a Regenerative Economy. We need a system that considers all stakeholders and has us think beyond profit for the short term. We cannot rely on a system that continuously fails us, drives us deeper into imperialism, fascism and climate devastation. Can we say President Trump has a democratic mandate when more voters sat out the election than voted for him? Capitalism is going to come into a crisis as we continue to drive up our debt to fund the overthrow of these governments for the benefit of these corporations.
